How I Made My First $100 Online
Hey social hustler! Do you ever think about the ways that you can make money online? Yes, there are a lot of resources out there that are telling you the “magic formula” or teaching the secrets to “passive” income, but the truth is making money online doesn’t follow a specific formula. It looks different for every business owner, and sometimes each month can look different too.
Instead of speaking in hypotheticals, I’m going to tell you exactly how I made my first $100 online.
I was recently featured in a Huffington Post article, “Don’t Create An Online Course Without Reading This First, where I talked about creating something that your audience actually wants. If your audience doesn’t want it, then they aren’t going to buy it just because they like you.
I think that a lot of times people create a product thinking it’s going to go well, but they didn’t take the necessary steps to discover if their audience actually wants that product.
My career started as social media execution company. My strategy required a lot of time and focus for each client, and I wanted to transition into helping more people on a larger scale. (I still do that with my YouTube channel, for free!)
I wanted to find the sweet spot that goes beyond the YouTube channel but doesn’t go as far as working one-on-one.Working with a few people one-on-one + a larger group of people at scale is my sweet spot.… Click To Tweet
When I was thinking about how I was going to make money online, I had a general idea of what I wanted it to look like for me:
I didn’t want to lose any time because I needed the majority of my time for my one-on-one clients.
I didn’t want to discount my fees because my value wasn’t going to be any less.
I didn’t want to compromise my vision.
I wanted everything to be aligned with the resume I was already building: social media expert with a forte in video and teaching businesses how to do that.
Once I knew all of this, I came up with the idea for an online class – I was going to teach businesses how to do use video in their business but in a different way that I did with my full-time clients.
But, the main question is still there: does anyone want this?
I had to figure that out FIRST, before building out the curriculum. I had to make sure people were going to pay for it before I did all of the work.
It’s not about wanting more education around a certain topic; it’s about wanting it enough to pay for it.
Here’s what I did to see if my community really wanted an online course: I created a sales page.
On that sales page, I listed the outline of the course, the benefits they would get, and set the course to begin in about a month.
The sales page was more of a pre-sale for a class that cost $97. I shared the sales page with the people on my email list, which had less than 1,000 subscribers.
I had 8 purchases within the first few hours!
Those eight people trusted me. I had proven to them that I had the knowledge and experience to teach them the skills they needed.
Those eight sales gave me the confidence and motivation to create something really great for them. Plus, making my first $100 online (…ok….$97) gave me the drive to create more in the future, which would only get better.
If you’ve been around the Internet in the last couple of years, you know that online courses are everywhere. But my thesis stands: test your audience and make sure you can create something they want.
There’s a lot of work that goes into creating something this big.
Let me be clear: the only reason I got immediate sales because of all of the work I put into the creating a FREE YouTube channel for years and years. I gave and gave and gave before I asked. I was not an overnight success.
