Be a Smart Connector for Startups
Networking is far and away the reason why I started my business and was able to stay afloat for more than 4 years now. If you don’t go out of your way for people they won’t go out of their way for you. One strategy to contribute to your network growth is to be a connector. And that’s what this week’s Sexy Wednesday is all about.
Connecting people with people, resources or information is by far one of the best ways to get referral business. People know they can count of you, so they hire you when they need you or send their friends and business colleagues.
A group of people you may not consider the most important for your own career are startups. They’re just getting things “started”. They don’t have a lot of direction (or sometimes they do). Overall they’re looking for people to count on in their circles to give them advice and share stories as they move along in this journey.
Anytime I see someone announce their new venture, I immediately reach out. This is the best time to congratulate them and get together so I can get educated about the type of work they’re doing. It’s good for me to have people I can refer business to, but even better I want to connect those people with anyone else or anything else I know about their industry that might shed some light on something important to them.
Do you know how many times I’ve heard people say “I’m so glad you introduced me to X because we were able to accomplish Y.”??? A lot. Because that’s what happens when you bring common denominators together, and you get to take the credit. Even if you never got business from those two people, the number of times you do it is leaving an amazing impression. And people remember how you made them feel. That ALWAYS pays off in the long run.
